I will master Julia’s Beouf Bourguignon!

I saw the movie Julie & Julia this weekend. It was fabulously entertaining! Even as a child in the 1970’s I enjoyed watching her TV show. I had forgotten how tall she was– 6’2”. She is quoted as having said, “If we ever get into the money, I am going to have a kitchen where everything is my height, and none of this pigmy stuff”! When Julia and her husband Paul designed the kitchen that we saw on TV they specified taller than standard countertops to better suit her. (Of course! That’s what any good kitchen designer would do!) She also said of the kitchen, “It’s utterly practical, but attractive to be in. And it’s got good equipment, good solid stuff…” My sentiments exactly! Fit and function first, then work on the aesthetics. You can see Julia Child’s kitchen at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. It’s also online at http://www.americanhistory.si.edu/kitchen/ There are some fun interactive tools and interesting stories about her and the kitchen.

I love to cook. Even so, spending 365 days mastering the art of French cooking is a bit daunting to me. Since seeing the movie though, I’m looking forward to a crisp fall weekend when I can spend hours preparing Julia’s Beouf Bourguignon!

Bon Appétit!
