The Woman Cave

We’ve been hearing about the “Man Cave” for years, but not so much about the “Woman Cave”.  I have heard some men say something like “women have the whole house, we only get one room.”  I guess the thought is that women get the kitchen, bathroom, kid’s rooms, and laundry.  Really?

This sign is at a retreat center that I happen to be staying in.  It’s on the way to the lower level, so it’s not just one room, but a collection of wonderful spaces to spread out in and get things done.  It’s meant for crafters and scrapbookers, but that’s not what I’m here for.  I’m not really into the skull and bow, but I do like the sign.  It has me thinking about a room in my own home that I’m trying to make into my cave, and what the ideal accoutrements would be for me.

1.  A comfortable chair, reading lamp, and small bookshelf or basket for books.
2.  A meditation cushion and small table with drawer to hold some candles and incense.  (My husband hates when I burn incense, so I’ll need to keep it contained in the Woman Cave!)
3.  A small cabinet area, just enough to hold an assortment of tea and perhaps a few bottles of wine, a few mugs and glasses, and an electric hot water pot.
4.  A small Bose audio system, like the Wave, and my favorite relaxing and meditation CD’s.
5.  A calming art collection on the wall, maybe something to focus on, like nature scenes.  (I’ll have to give that more thought.)
6.  Sherwin-Williams Meditative on the walls, Navajo White on the trim and doors, and maybe Saffron Thread on the ceiling.
7.  A natural-fiber rug over the wood floor.
8.  This 10 x 10 room will sometimes need to be a guest room.  Murphy bed with cabinets on either side?  Yes, I think that might be the way to go.

Voila, I’ve just designed my Woman Cave!  Now that I have a plan I can get started.  What would be in your ideal cave?  We’d love to hear your thoughts.
