Universal Design Video

Universal design does not only mean designing for disabilities… it means designing for all abilities, and keeping in mind some commonalities we all face such as injury or illness, not to mention visitors of various ages to a home. This bath video from Kohler shows some wonderful universal features in a very aesthetically pleasing way. A few of the features that can easily be incorporated into a bathroom design could include:
1. Framing the walls around the tub, toilet, and shower areas for installation of grab bars, either now or later.
2. Faucets that are lever controlled and anti-scald.
3. Slip-resistant flooring, both in the shower and for the main floor area.
4. Vanity heights to accommodate those who may be using that bathroom.
5. Appropriate lighting in the shower, toilet, and vanity areas.
Careful and thoughtful design planning are the first and most important steps to creating a beautiful and functional universal bathroom!
